Beach pea (lathyrus japonicus)
As the name suggests beach peas are found near beaches. Vine like, they grow in clumps and bear pretty purple blossoms. The pods are one to two inches long and contain several tiny peas. They are best young when they are bright green and tender, usually starting late July.
Peas should be cooked in boiling water for 15 minutes.
There may be controversy regarding the edibility of different types of peas. As far as this kind goes, the seed is said to be perfectly safe and very nutritious in small quantities, but should not comprise more than 30% of the diet.
